Forex Broker Review and Rating Methodology

Our forex broker ratings follow a structured methodology designed to compare brokers using the factors that have the greatest practical impact on traders. The assessment is based on publicly available information, official broker websites, regulatory registers, legal documents, account terms, platform specifications, pricing information, funding policies and, where appropriate, direct communication with customer support.

Every broker is assessed across seven core categories. Each category receives a score from 0 to 5, and the broker’s overall rating is calculated as a weighted average of those category scores.

Greater weighting is assigned to Trust & Safety, Pricing and Trading Costs, Platforms and Trading Features, and Funding Your Account because these areas generally have the strongest influence on account security, trading expenses and the overall trading experience.

The purpose of this methodology is to provide clear, consistent and practical broker comparisons for beginners, intermediate traders, experienced traders and professional clients.

Important risk warning: Forex, CFDs and other leveraged products involve a high level of risk and are not suitable for every trader. Leverage can magnify losses and may result in the loss of a substantial amount of capital. Our reviews are provided solely for informational and educational purposes. They do not constitute financial or investment advice and should not be interpreted as a recommendation to open an account with any particular broker.

Affiliate disclosure: We may receive compensation from certain brokers or commercial partners featured on the website. This compensation does not determine or influence the ratings assigned. Broker scores are calculated according to the methodology described on this page, including trust, pricing, accounts, products, trading conditions, platforms, funding and customer support.

How Broker Ratings Are Calculated

Each broker is evaluated across the following seven scored categories:

Assessment Category Weighting
Trust & Safety 22%
Pricing and Trading Costs 22%
Accounts and Minimum Deposit 9%
Products and Trading Conditions 11%
Platforms and Trading Features 17%
Funding Your Account 14%
Customer Support 5%
Overall Broker Rating = Sum of each category score × its category weighting

For example, a Trust & Safety score of 4.5 out of 5, combined with a weighting of 22%, contributes 0.99 to the broker’s overall score:

4.5 × 22% = 0.99

The final result may be displayed on a five-point scale or converted to a ten-point scale.

Market research, educational materials, promotions and other supplementary services may be discussed in a broker review where relevant, but they do not form part of the numerical broker rating.

Ratings may be revised whenever a broker changes its regulatory status, pricing, account structure, minimum deposit, product range, trading conditions, platforms, funding policies, customer support or another material feature.

1. Trust & Safety

Trust & Safety is a central component of the review. It assesses the broker’s apparent security and reliability by examining the regulation of the client-serving entity, any additional licenses and the firm’s operating history. Regulatory evidence is checked according to our information-verification process, while regulator classifications follow the separate regulatory tier framework.

Assessment Component Weighting Within Category
Main regulatory protection 70%
Additional regulatory licenses 15%
Market presence and operating history 15%

Main Regulatory Protection

The principal score is based on the regulator supervising the entity with which the trader opens an account. Stronger regulatory authorities generally impose more demanding requirements concerning client-money handling, capital adequacy, complaints procedures, risk disclosures and business conduct.

Regulatory Classification Rating
Tier-1 regulation 5
Tier-2 regulation 4
Tier-3 regulation 3
Offshore regulation with limited protection 2
Unregulated or regulatory status cannot be verified 1

Additional Regulatory Licenses

Additional licenses can demonstrate broader regulatory oversight and a more established international presence. However, they are treated as supplementary evidence and do not replace the protection provided by the client-serving entity.

Additional Licenses Held Rating
Several Tier-1 licenses across major jurisdictions 5
At least two additional strong regulatory licenses 4
One additional Tier-1 license 3
One additional Tier-2 or Tier-3 license 2
No additional regulatory licenses 1

Market Presence and Operating History

Operating history is used as a supporting indicator of stability. A longer history does not guarantee that a broker is safe, but it provides more evidence regarding the company’s ability to operate through different market conditions.

Operating History Rating
20 years or more 5
10–19 years 4
5–9 years 3
2–4 years 2
Under 2 years or operating history cannot be verified 1

2. Pricing and Trading Costs

Pricing and Trading Costs measures how much a trader may pay when opening, maintaining and closing positions. The assessment considers spreads, commissions, overnight financing charges and non-trading fees.

Where possible, average or typical spreads are used instead of advertised minimum spreads. Minimum spreads may be available only during highly liquid market conditions and may not accurately represent the cost experienced by most traders.

Assessment Component Weighting Within Category
Standard account spreads 30%
Raw-spread or commission-based account costs 25%
Commissions and overnight financing costs 20%
Non-trading fees 15%
Pricing transparency 10%

1.1–1.5 pips 3
1.6–2.0 pips 2
Above 2.0 pips or spread information cannot be verified 1

Raw-Spread and Commission-Based Accounts

Raw-spread accounts are assessed using the combined trading cost rather than the advertised spread alone. The commission must be added to the spread to determine the approximate total cost of a trade.

Raw Account Pricing Rating
Spread of 0.2 pips or less and commission below $3 per lot per side 5
Spread of 0.2 pips or less and commission of $3–$4 per lot per side 4
Spread of 0.3–0.5 pips and commission below $4 per lot per side 3
Spread above 0.5 pips or commission above $4 per lot per side 2
High or unclear spreads and commissions 1

Overall Assessment

The final verdict brings together the broker’s main strengths and limitations from the complete scoring process. It also identifies the trader profiles the broker may suit best, using the criteria in our suitability-by-experience framework.

Unsupported superlatives such as “best broker,” “safest broker” or “most reliable broker” should not be used unless they are clearly justified by the methodology, category results, relevant comparison group and review date.

Each final verdict covers:

  • Key strengths
  • Key weaknesses
  • The trader profiles most likely to benefit
  • The principal reasons for the rating
  • Material limitations and risks
  • The original review date or most recent update date

Review Maintenance and Updates

Broker conditions are subject to change. Regulatory arrangements, spreads, commissions, payment methods, platforms, account types, promotions and support standards may be altered after a review has been published.

Reviews should therefore be refreshed regularly whenever possible, and material changes may lead to a revised rating. Before opening or funding an account, traders should verify all important details directly with the broker and, where appropriate, the relevant regulator.
