How TopFxBrokers Evaluated OANDA?

Our take on OANDA

Verdict in Brief

OANDA earns an overall score of 4 out of 5. It is best suited to traders who value strong regulation, reliable execution and a broad choice of platforms more than the lowest possible trading costs. Forex traders benefit from small position sizes, TradingView and MetaTrader support, and flexible API access. Pricing can be competitive on commission-based accounts, although standard spreads are not always the cheapest in the market. The most attractive rates may also require higher funding levels or trading volumes, which makes them less practical for occasional traders.

Best Suited To

  • Forex traders who want small, precise position sizes
  • Technical traders using OANDA Web, TradingView or MetaTrader
  • Systematic traders who need REST API or FIX connectivity
  • Beginners who want a demo account and no standard minimum deposit
  • High-volume traders who qualify for core pricing or rebates
Pros
  • Regulated in eight jurisdictions
  • Strong proprietary and third-party platforms
  • Small trade sizes and useful risk controls
  • Good research, charting and API support
Cons
  • Terms vary considerably by legal entity
  • Core pricing can require a $10,000 deposit or high turnover
  • No native social copy-trading network
  • Standard spreads are not always market-leading

Can OANDA Be Trusted?

4.7/5

Regulation and Licenses

Few retail forex brands have a regulatory footprint as broad as OANDA's. The group operates through the following entities:

  • United States: OANDA Corporation is registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and is an NFA member under number 0325821.
  • United Kingdom: OANDA Europe Limited is authorized by the Financial Conduct Authority under reference number 542574 and company registration number 07110087.
  • Canada: OANDA Canada Corporation ULC is regulated by the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization.
  • Australia: OANDA Australia Pty Ltd holds Australian Financial Services Licence 412981.
  • Singapore: OANDA Asia Pacific Pte Ltd holds a Capital Markets Services license and company number 200704926K.
  • Japan: OANDA Japan Co Ltd is registered with the Kanto Local Finance Bureau under number 2137.
  • Poland: OANDA TMS Brokers SA is supervised under authorization KPWiG 4021 54 1 2004.
  • British Virgin Islands: OANDA Global Markets Ltd is regulated under license SIBA/L/20/1130.

That range of licenses is a clear strength, although it should not be treated as one universal rulebook. The contracting entity named in the client agreement determines which protections, leverage limits and dispute procedures apply.

Client Money Protection

Eligible funds held by OANDA Europe are segregated under the United Kingdom client asset rules. Canadian customers can receive up to CAD$1,000,000 of Canadian Investor Protection Fund coverage, according to OANDA Canada. The position is different in the United States, where retail spot forex accounts are not securities accounts and therefore do not qualify for Securities Investor Protection Corporation coverage.

Negative Balance Protection

Retail clients of the UK entity are protected from losing more than the money in an eligible account. That safeguard does not extend to every customer. Professional status, or an account with another group entity, can leave the trader responsible for a deficit, so the classification shown during onboarding deserves close attention.

Security and Company Track Record

Longevity counts in forex, and OANDA's operating history reaches back to 1996. The company has traded through several periods of severe market stress, although its private ownership means investors receive less public financial information than they would from a listed broker.

FTMO completed its acquisition of OANDA in December 2025. The brokerage continues to operate as a separately regulated business, while the former OANDA Prop Trader service transferred into the FTMO group in March 2026.

At the account level, protection includes identity checks, encrypted access and two-factor authentication through OANDA Hub. The group's headquarters is located at 17 State Street, Suite 300, New York, NY 10004-1501.

Pricing and Trading Costs

2.8/5

Forex Spreads and Commissions

Spreads are variable rather than fixed. Weighted average spreads are 0.9 pips for EUR/USD, 1.6 pips for GBP/USD, 0.38 points for gold and 0.7 points for the S&P 500 CFD. Those averages provide a more useful budgeting guide than the headline minimums alone.

Under standard pricing, the broker's charge is usually built into the spread. Core pricing takes the opposite approach, combining narrower spreads with a separate commission. United States clients pay $7 per 100,000 currency units and need a $10,000 minimum deposit for that structure. Volume rebates range from $5 to $17 per million, while Elite Trader status is aimed at turnover of at least $10 million per month. In Singapore, selected plans quote commissions from $3 per 100,000 units.

Overnight Financing Charges

A position carried through the daily financing cutoff, normally 5:00 p.m. New York time, may generate either a charge or a credit. The result depends on the instrument, trade direction, position value, benchmark rate and OANDA's adjustment:

position value × annual financing rate × holding days ÷ 365

Spot forex rollover on Wednesday commonly covers three days rather than one, with holiday calendars occasionally shifting the schedule.

Funding and Currency Conversion Costs

OANDA does not normally add a fee to major deposit or withdrawal methods. Banks, card issuers and payment services may still deduct their own charges. A separate 1.0% conversion fee applies on OANDA Europe's v20 and v20 MetaTrader 4 accounts when a transaction or realized profit and loss must be translated into the account's base currency.

Inactivity and Other Charges

Accounts without a qualifying trade for 12 months can incur an inactivity fee. In the United States, the charge reaches $20 per month. Depending on the product and region, traders may also encounter guaranteed stop premiums, selected market data fees, share CFD commissions or charges passed on by banks.

Accounts and Minimum Deposit

3.9/5

Account Options

For the standard account, OANDA sets no minimum deposit in its major regions. The wider account menu can include:

  • Standard: spread-only pricing and flexible trade sizes
  • Core pricing: tighter spreads plus commission, with a $10,000 United States minimum
  • Elite Trader: rebates and additional support for active United States clients
  • Professional: higher leverage with reduced retail protection for eligible United Kingdom clients
  • Spread betting: available to eligible United Kingdom residents
  • Regional CFD accounts: specifications set by the relevant local entity

Professional classification in the United Kingdom requires at least two of three tests. These cover recent trading activity, a financial instrument portfolio above the local equivalent of $500,000, and relevant work experience in financial services. Available base currencies vary, with USD, EUR, HKD and SGD among the common choices.

Demo and Swap-Free Accounts

The demo account is useful for learning the platform, checking order types and testing a strategy before capital is at risk. As with any simulation, it cannot reproduce the emotional pressure, slippage or liquidity conditions of live trading.

Swap-free access is limited to selected entities. Instead of conventional overnight interest, these accounts may apply administrative charges, so they should be judged on the full holding cost rather than the label alone.

Products and Trading Conditions

4.6/5

Tradable Markets

Market coverage changes sharply by location. The United States operation lists 68 currency pairs and selected spot cryptocurrency access through Paxos. Through OANDA Europe, the range expands to index, commodity, metal and bond CFDs, alongside more than 1,500 share CFDs and dozens of ETF CFDs.

This selection is broad enough for most forex, index and commodity strategies. It is less convincing for investors seeking listed shares, options, futures or mutual funds from one account. Share CFDs provide exposure to price movements, but they do not confer ownership or voting rights.

Leverage and Margin Requirements

Leverage at OANDA depends on the trader’s location, account classification and chosen instrument. In the United States, retail forex leverage is capped at 1:50 on major currency pairs and 1:20 on other pairs, while UK retail clients face tighter product-specific limits. Professional clients may access leverage of up to 1:100 on selected markets, but they give up protections such as negative balance protection. Margin requirements rise as exposure increases, so traders using larger positions must maintain sufficient free equity to avoid forced liquidation during volatile conditions.

Execution Quality and Trading Rules

For many retail instruments, OANDA acts as principal and market maker rather than sending every order to an exchange. Trades are filled at the best price available when the order reaches the market, which means both positive and negative slippage are possible during rapid moves or thin liquidity.

Scalping and trading around economic news are generally allowed in standard brokerage accounts. Hedging rules are more dependent on location. United States accounts follow first-in, first-out treatment and restrict ordinary hedging in the same currency pair, whereas some international entities permit offsetting positions.

Platforms and Trading Features

4.6/5

Supported Platforms

OANDA supports a strong mix of proprietary and third party trading platforms, although the exact selection depends on the client’s region. Its web and mobile platforms provide a straightforward route for everyday trading, with integrated charts, watchlists, alerts and order management. Traders who prefer more advanced visual analysis can connect their account to TradingView, while MetaTrader 4 remains available for custom indicators, Expert Advisors and automated strategies. MetaTrader 5 is also offered through several OANDA entities, including the UK, Europe, Singapore and the British Virgin Islands. This range should suit most trading styles, but clients should confirm local availability before choosing a platform or developing an automated setup.

Charts, Research and Analysis

The proprietary web platform is built for active chart work. It includes 11 chart types, more than 65 technical indicators and intervals ranging from 5 seconds to 1 month. MarketPulse adds economic calendars, technical commentary, webinars and coverage of market-moving events, giving traders a useful research layer without forcing them to leave the OANDA ecosystem.

Developers can work with pricing, orders, account information and historical data through the v20 REST API. Price history extends to 2005, and the standard request limit is 120 requests per second. Access still depends on the account type and region.

Automated and Copy Trading

Automation is one of OANDA's better developed areas. MetaTrader Expert Advisors suit off-the-shelf systems, the v20 API allows custom applications, and FIX connectivity serves institutional workflows. What is missing is a native social copy-trading network. Traders who want to follow other strategies must rely on compatible third-party MetaTrader signal services.

Partner virtual private server services are also available. A VPS can keep an automated strategy connected more reliably, but it cannot guarantee a fill or eliminate slippage.

Learning Materials

Educational materials are spread across OANDA Learn, webinars, smart videos, Trade Tap and MarketPulse. Subjects range from basic forex mechanics and platform use to technical analysis, risk control and trading psychology. The library is practical and easy to browse, though learners looking for a single step-by-step curriculum may find it less cohesive than a formal course.

Joining OANDA

Registration and Identity Checks

Opening an account involves more than entering contact details. Applicants are asked about residence, tax status, employment, finances and trading experience. A passport, driving license or national identity card may be required, along with proof of address when electronic verification cannot confirm the information. Deposits must normally come from a payment account held in the client's own name.

Approval Times

A straightforward electronic check can be completed on the same day. Delays usually arise when documents need manual review, scans are unclear, addresses do not match or enhanced due diligence is required.

Funding Your Account

3.6/5

Deposit and Withdrawal Methods

Available methods depend on the account's jurisdiction. The methods include Visa, Mastercard, Discover, bank wire, ACH, SEPA, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Wise and QR code payment. QR code payments are available for deposits rather than a withdrawal option.

OANDA does not impose a standard minimum on card deposits, although the card provider can set its own limits. Withdrawals usually travel back to the original funding source first, with remaining profits sent by bank transfer. Extra checks may be requested for unusually large or irregular transactions.

Processing Times

Processing times depend on the payment method and the OANDA entity holding the account. Card and electronic deposits are often credited immediately or within one business day, while domestic bank transfers generally take one to three business days. International wires may take up to five business days. Withdrawal requests are usually processed within one to three business days, although the receiving bank or card provider may take longer to release the funds. Delays can also occur when payment details require verification or the withdrawal must be returned through the original funding method.

Help and Customer Service

3.5/5

Contact Options and Availability

Customer service generally operates around the clock from Monday to Friday. Depending on the region, clients can use live chat, email, telephone, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and selected SMS channels. The group publishes [email protected] and +1 877 626 3239 as general contacts, although account-specific questions are better directed through the relevant regional route in OANDA Hub.

Response Speed and Service Quality

Live chat is the most practical channel for basic account or platform queries. More involved trading disputes take longer: OANDA Europe advises that detailed trade inquiries may require 2 to 5 business days. Supplying order numbers, screenshots and exact timestamps can make the review process more efficient.

Languages and Complaint Handling

English, Chinese, Spanish, Italian and French are among the supported languages, with further local coverage available in certain offices.

The January 2026 complaint policy for OANDA Europe aims to settle an initial dispute within 3 business days. When a matter becomes a formal complaint, messages sent to [email protected] should receive a full written response within 8 weeks. An eligible client who remains dissatisfied can approach the United Kingdom Financial Ombudsman Service within 6 months of the final response.

How OANDA Compares

Better Choice for New Traders

IG has the edge for beginners who want a structured learning path and a very wide product list. IG Academy provides courses, webinars and seminars, the demo account contains $10,000 in virtual funds, and more than 15,000 markets are offered. OANDA answers with finer forex position sizing, which can be useful when practicing disciplined risk control.

Better Choice for Lower Costs

Pepperstone presents a simpler low-cost case for active MetaTrader or cTrader users. Its Razor account advertises spreads from 0.0 pips plus commission. OANDA's core pricing and rebates can be competitive, but the result depends more heavily on region, deposit level and monthly volume.

Better Choice for Experienced Traders

Saxo is the stronger match for experienced investors building a diversified portfolio from listed shares, options, futures, bonds and other instruments. Its range exceeds 71,000 instruments. OANDA is narrower, yet more focused, with particular strength in forex, CFDs and API-driven currency strategies.

Reasons to Choose OANDA

  • OANDA Web, mobile, TradingView and MetaTrader access
  • REST API, historical pricing and FIX connectivity
  • MarketPulse research and practical educational materials
  • Core pricing and rebates for qualifying clients

How We Reviewed OANDA

Testing and Scoring Process

Every broker is assessed using the same review methodology and scoring framework. Applying consistent criteria across all reviews makes it easier to compare brokers on matters such as regulation, pricing, platforms, account conditions, market access, funding, and customer support. A full explanation of the process is available on our broker review methodology page.

Editorial and Commercial Disclosure

Our broker reviews are produced independently and do not constitute personal financial advice. The same methodology, scoring criteria, and editorial standards are applied to every broker, and no commercial relationships influence our evaluations.

Broker terms can change after publication. While we review and update broker information regularly, readers should still confirm current spreads, commissions, leverage limits, minimum deposits, promotions, payment methods, restricted jurisdictions, and client protection measures before opening or funding an account.

Final Assessment

OANDA earns its strongest marks where serious forex traders tend to notice the difference: regulation, flexible sizing, charting and system connectivity. The combination of OANDA Web, TradingView, MetaTrader and the v20 API covers manual, technical and automated approaches without forcing every client into the same platform.

The trade-off is a broker that cannot be judged from one global headline. Costs, products, leverage and protection depend on where the account is held, and standard spreads are not always the cheapest available. Traders who identify their legal entity, read the full fee schedule and keep leverage controlled should find OANDA a credible and technically capable choice.

Frequently Asked Questoins

Does OANDA support MetaTrader 5?

Yes, through selected entities, including the United Kingdom. Clients may also have access to MetaTrader 4, TradingView, OANDA Web and the broker's mobile applications.

Can OANDA clients hedge positions?

It depends on the jurisdiction. United States accounts apply first-in, first-out rules and restrict ordinary hedging in the same pair, while some other OANDA entities allow offsetting positions.

Does OANDA allow scalping and news trading?

Both approaches are generally accepted in standard brokerage accounts. Around major releases, however, traders should expect a greater chance of wider spreads and slippage.

Does OANDA offer copy trading?

There is no native OANDA copy-trading network. Compatible third-party MetaTrader signal services may provide an alternative.
